Love captured in a bubble must be the sweetest kind
Imagine slowly turning something by hand each day for an average period of 24 months
The reason: to get each bubble to form in just the right way.
As I listened to Gerhard Perold from Perold Wine Cellars talking about how Sparkling Wine is made during our recent Southern African food and wine pairing, I fell in love again.
In love with South African wine.
In love with the stories of the people who grow and make the wine.
In love with the passion of our people and as always the food.
The love of something you care about.
A single perfect bubble view
The commitment and dedication it takes to turn a dream like this into reality is inspiring.
Every day is a step closer to your goal – your own wine, your own demonstration kitchen on a smallholding; eventually your own farm.
It reminded me of why I love to cook and bake in the first place.
A journey of your senses.
The start: sourcing the right ingredients in a sustainable way.
The middle: the experience of mixing these together.
Then adding or subtracting to get just the right balance of flavours.
The end: the enjoyment on the faces of those I care about when they eat the food.
As I talked about Southern African food during our pairing event, I felt homesick
I experienced a sudden, yet deep longing to be in the country I grew up in.
Whether it was the lamb or talking about the bush, I missed the land of the wide open spaces, my Namibia.
In a sense I guess I got caught up in that perfect bubble of love
The passion I feel for my Southern African heritage, its people, its incredible wine industry and diverse food culture.
So today I remind myself that real passion is a gift.
A thing you cannot bottle, unlike bubbles.
So just as the yeast, etc. ferments and the carbon monoxide gets trapped, forming perfect bubbles of love for Sparkling Wine; I too am continuing building my love of Southern African food from M’s Kitchen.
My goal: bringing you the experience of love and passion captured plate by plate.
My journey is a journey of discovery.
Of self, of people and their stories and the food and wine I love with all my heart.
